In what was a perfect afternoon for football at Cottam Hall, Poulton FC Reserves claimed their first victory of the season with a resounding 5-1 win over CMB FC Reserves. This much-needed result comes after a tough start to the campaign, where the team struggled in back-to-back defeats. Today, however, everything seemed to click into place.

The match started brightly for the home side, and it didn’t take long for Poulton to assert their dominance. In the 9th minute, a beautifully delivered free kick from Jordan Bullen found the head of Will Donegani, who made no mistake in directing the ball into the back of the net, putting Poulton ahead 1-0. The early goal set the tone for the rest of the match, giving the team a boost of confidence that had been lacking in recent weeks.

The home side continued to press, and in the 25th minute, their efforts were rewarded again. Adam Jennings aimed a powerful shot towards goal, only for it to ricochet off the post. Luckily for Poulton, Irving Dorman was in the right place at the right time to slot the rebound into the net, doubling the lead to 2-0.

The first half continued to be one-way traffic, and Poulton extended their lead further in the 39th minute. This time, Donegani turned provider, setting up Jennings, who finished with precision to make it 3-0. Just when it seemed Poulton would cruise into halftime with a comfortable lead, CMB FC Reserves managed to pull one back in the 40th minute, leaving the score at 3-1 as the teams headed into the break.

After halftime, Poulton picked up right where they left off. In the 50th minute, Reece Russell latched onto a clever pass from Will Andrew and calmly slotted the ball past the CMB keeper to restore the three-goal advantage at 4-1.

The icing on the cake came in the 65th minute when Poulton was awarded a penalty. Jennings stepped up confidently and dispatched the spot-kick, securing his second goal of the match and Poulton’s fifth. The home side saw out the rest of the game with solid defending and composed possession, ensuring that CMB had no chance of a comeback.

This comprehensive 5-1 victory marks a significant turning point for Poulton FC Reserves. After tough losses at home to Lostock St Gerards Reserves and away to Chipping FC Reserves, today’s win was exactly what the team needed to boost morale and get their season back on track.

The victory was noteworthy, with Assistant Manager Danny Porter stepping in as player-manager for the day in place of Danny Morris. Porter’s leadership was evident throughout the match. After the game, he remarked, “After a poor start to the season we had to show some character and desire. We definitely did this from the start and quickly took control of the game. After shipping in 10 goals in 2 games it was vital that we shut up shop and defended as a team starting from the front. We pressed and worked hard to recover once out of possession. We played some great football from back to front & created quite a few chances, which had been missing from the previous 2 games. Great performance all round against an inform CMB team.

As the team looks ahead, they will aim to build on this momentum and continue improving throughout the season. Today’s win showed the potential that Poulton FC Reserves have, and with continued hard work, more positive results will surely follow.
