For today’s Player in Focus we caught up with one of the youngest players at the club to discuss his first season at Poulton. As one of the youngest but toughest players in the club, how has it been so far? “It’s been a great experience so far. Coming in as one of the youngest in the squad, it was a bit daunting at first going from a quality under-18s league into men’s football, but I’ve adapted quickly. The lads have been brilliant—really welcoming—and it’s a competitive environment that pushes you every day. I’m enjoying my football more than ever right now.” You’ve played for the Reserves and Firsts this season, what have you learned so far? “I made my debut for the reserves in November, which was a proud moment, but shortly after I had to have surgery on my knee and was out for about three months. It was a tough period, but the managers were really supportive and helped me stay focused. When I came back, I was given the opportunity to captain the reserves in the round of 16—we won on penalties and I managed to get my first goal as well, which made it even more special. Being the youngest in the squad and captaining players older than me was a big moment for my confidence. I’ve also had two first-team appearances, which has been a pleasure. It’s a really competitive setup, and being around that level has taught me a lot already. The reserves manager even described me as a young Steven Gerrard, which as a Liverpool fan is probably the best compliment I could receive.” What do you see as your biggest goals here? “My biggest goal is to be playing for the first team week in, week out, and hopefully one day even captain the side. But I know nothing gets handed to you, so for now it’s about working hard, improving every game, and constantly raising my standards. I want to be putting in performances that make the manager really think every week and prove that I’m ready to step up and stay there.” What would you say to any young player stepping into this league and wanting to join Poulton? “I’d massively recommend it. It can feel quite daunting at first making that step up into men’s football, but once you settle in, it’s a great place to be. The environment helps you develop quickly, and if you’re willing to work hard, you’ll really enjoy it and improve your game.” Into a semi-final of the biggest Reserve cup, what is the goal? “Getting into the semi-final is something we’re all really proud of, especially with the journey we’ve had this season. There’s a real sense of pride in the group, and that’s something we’ll be taking into the game with us. We know what it means to represent the club at this stage, and we’ll go into it giving everything for each other and for Poulton. At the same time, we’re not satisfied just being there—the aim is to go all the way and win it. In my first season at the club, it would be massive to be part of a side that lifts that trophy, and that’s exactly what we’re all focused on now.” Post Views: 6 15 Like Post navigation Player In Focus – Toby Scammell Player In Focus – Dan Smith
