It was a tough afternoon for Poulton as they travelled to Fulwood Amateurs, looking to avenge the defeat from early August. Unfortunately, things didn’t go to plan, with the home side running out 6-0 winners in a game where Poulton never quite found their feet. The game began brightly for Poulton, who were awarded an early free kick in a promising position. George Byrne stepped up and struck the ball goalwards, forcing the Fulwood keeper into a save. The rebound fell kindly to Billy McKenna, but his close-range effort was straight at the goalkeeper, allowing Fulwood to escape unscathed. This missed opportunity seemed to fire up the home side, who soon took control of the game. Poulton struggled to maintain possession, and Fulwood’s growing dominance was rewarded when they beat the offside trap in the 12th minute to make it 1-0. Nine minutes later, they scored an almost identical goal to double their lead. It was a ruthless display of finishing—two chances, two goals. Despite Fulwood being in command, Poulton did manage to create a couple of other half-chances, but the Fulwood keeper stood strong. The half-time whistle blew with Poulton trailing 2-0, and there was still hope of a comeback if they could find a spark in the second half. However, any hopes of a Poulton revival were crushed just 36 seconds after the restart when Fulwood added a third. From that point on, confidence drained from the Poulton players, and they never recovered. Fulwood piled on the pressure, and Poulton conceded three more goals in a second half they’d rather forget. Manager Dale Azzopardi didn’t pull any punches after the game, saying: “We were miles away from the level we’ve been playing at recently, and against a team as good as Fulwood, you can’t afford to drop your standards. We deserted our principles and never really turned up. We’ll dust ourselves down and work hard to put things right. I believe in this group of players, and they will bounce back.” Poulton will be hoping to put this result behind them when they host Cleator Moor this Saturday, aiming to reverse another early-season defeat. Let’s hope the lads can bounce back and show the form we all know they’re capable of!
