Poulton doesn’t just contain local lads, we pride ourselves on a longstanding relationship with Fleetwood Town International Football Academy. Today we caught up with American born centre-half, Ben Liptrott, as he talks about his time here so far…

How has the transition been for you – moving from the U.S. to play football here, both on and off the pitch?

“It’s been really good, to be fair. A big change, but I’ve loved it. The football culture here is massive and everyone takes it seriously, which is class. Off the pitch, everyone’s been proper welcoming, so it’s made settling in a lot easier”

What’s been the biggest adjustment in terms of style of play compared to what you were used to back home?

“Definitely the pace and physicality. The game here’s quicker and you’ve got to make decisions faster and be sharper on the ball. Back home it’s a bit more structured, but here it’s all about reacting and staying switched on the whole time”

You’ve made an incredibly strong start at Poulton this season – what do you think has helped you settle in and perform so quickly?

“Honestly, it’s down to the people. The coaches and the lads have been class since day one. There’s a proper team spirit here, which helped me settle straight away. I came in wanting to graft and prove myself, and that mindset’s helped loads”

Looking ahead, what are your personal goals for the rest of this season at Poulton and FTIFA?

“Just to keep improving every week really. I want to stay consistent and help the team however I can — whether that’s scoring, assisting, or just putting in a proper shift. I’m also focused on developing technically and learning as much as I can from the coaches”

Is there any current Poulton player that you take the most inspiration from?

“Yeah, definitely Barty. The way he trains and the way he plays in games — he’s got a top attitude and sets the standard for everyone. Watching how he goes about things pushes me to keep raising my own level”
